Workbench Tutorial 1

The first step is to connect your Pico to your computer, start EigenD with no setup and start up the Workbench. The Workbench canvas will now show 2 agents; EigenD 1, and Workbench.

Select the create tool and create the following agents; Pico Manager 1, Scaler 1, Audio Unit 1, and Audio 1. If you are using an Alpha or Tau rather than a Pico you will need to create an Alpha Manager (which is used by both Alpha and Tau Eigenharps) instead of a Pico Manager. If your instrument is connected to the computer, an agent called Keyboard Pico 1, Alpha Keyboard 1 or Tau Keyboard 1 will also be created - these agents will come and go when your instrument is connected or disconnected and will automatically be reconnected if they were connected previously.

Use the move tool to arrange these agents as you would like. A horizontal row with the Keyboard Pico Agent on the left is the most sensible arrangement as the Workbench is designed to show signal flow from left to right. The Pico Manager 1 Agent can be put out of the way with the Eigend and Workbench agents as we won't be making any connections to it.

Tip: Note that if you disconnect the Pico from the computer, the Keyboard Pico 1 Agent will disappear. When you connect it again the agent and connections will reappear. If you are working through the tutorials without your Pico to hand, you will have to skip making the connection to the Keyboard Agent until the Pico is connected.


For this initial setup we can make the connections using the automatic behaviour of the Plumber Agent. As explained in the section Making and Changing Connections this means that we can use the wiring tool to make connections between the top level agent boxes on the canvas and the Plumber will make the necessary lower level connections for us (we can expand the agent boxes and change these connections later if we wish). Select the wiring tool and create a connection from the output (red pin on the right hand side) of the Keyboard Pico agent to the input (green pin on the left hand side) of the Scaler 1 Agent. Then connect the Scaler 1 output pin to the Audio Unit 1 input pin.


Out of interest, if you expand the Keyboard Pico 1 and Scaler 1 Agents you can see that the Plumber has made numerous connections between the 3 agents. In general, if you make a connection at a high level the Plumber will try to do the most sensible thing with all the underlying connections. These connections are usually what you would expect, but if you want to do something different or it has not produced the result that you want then you can change them.


The last connection we need to make, before we can play this simple setup, is from the Audio Unit 1 Agent to the Audio 1 Agent. Connect the Audio Unit 1 output pin to the Audio 1 input pin.


The next step in this basic setup is to select a plugin for the Audio Unit 1 Agent. To do this select the edit tool and click on the Audio Unit 1 Agent. A dialog is displayed showing various properties of the agent.


Click the browse button next to next to the entry named 'plugin'. A list of the available plugins in displayed in a tree format. Select the plugin you want. Here we've selected Camel Audio Alchemy.


EigenD will create a window and display the user interface for the plugin.


Finally, make sure that you have the Audio Agent set up correctly by clicking the Audio 1 Agent with the edit tool. Select the audio port you want to use and the sample rate from the drop down lists.


You should now be able to play your Pico. Save the setup using the EigenD save setup command on the EigenD File menu.


We have given this setup the short tag "Workbench Tutorial 1" and will refer to it by this name in other sections.
